Payton is a young black man with a chance to marry the top leaders of the black community. But first he must give up the secret, the child not born to the old girl. She desperately needs money and time away from her fiancé, who knows nothing about the baby. He finds a solution for the rich and stubborn Gregory Devereaux (Keith David), an ordinary old man from his favorite diner. Employed by Devereauxs, a daughter who has resigned as her supervisor, Payton soon becomes a confidant of Gregorys and Payton’s problems seem to disappear. But as Devereaux nears death — and weddings and babies fast approaching — Gregorys’ past sins force Payton to focus on his own decisions as a person. He must choose: marry a rich man, or do well.
